TSOL 108: Language and Culture examines differing worldviews of language and culture, cultural patterns and the role of English in a intercultural context.� The course is designed to encourage students to discover and challenge their own cultural assumptions and values, and to apply their research and further understanding to their teaching principles and strategies in the second language classroom.
Corequisite: Full time enrolment in the Selkirk College TSOL Program.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- discuss the connections between culture, values and identity and how they might affect both teachers and learners;
- reflect on her or his personal values and cultural assumptions, and consider how they might influence his or her teaching;
- develop ways to lessen the occurrence and impact of common cultural misunderstandings and stereotypes, in the language classroom;
- document some of the cross-cultural adjustments needed when people live in a new culture, and recommend ways to make those adjustments easier for learners and teachers; and
- formulate a personal plan for teaching in an international context.
