Observing and experiencing different teaching environments is an integral part of a teaching program. TSOL 111: Practical Studies in Education is a practical education opportunity. Students will observe a wide variety of instructional methods through observations and assisting where possible in various teaching environments including: Selkirk International English Language Program, approved local elementary or high school placements, educational workshops or short-term programs or at daycare centres. Through observation, assisting instructors where possible and discussions with experienced instructors, students gain first-hand experience and insight in to different delivery methods. A one-hour weekly group seminar provides the opportunity for students to share and reflect on their experience.
Corequisite: Enrolment in the Selkirk College TESOL Program or the Language and Culture Experience Program

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- reflect on, discuss and evaluate strenghts and weaknesses in the planning, delivery and follow up of lessons for English Language or Additional Language Students as presented in the disussion seminar from their observations
- observe teaching strategies and student responses and record observations in an unbiased and non-judgmental way
- utilize their observations and experience in a vounteer classroom experience, to identify and assess the language requirements, interests and goals of various activities that are presented in the classroom as well as different cultural approaches to teaching
- explore different methods of language delivery by observing various delivery methods through volunteer experiences which may include some of the following: online delivery, other language delivery, age differences, different instructional styles
- interact with and give feedback to students in a supportive and positive manner for both verbal and written communication
- demonstrate professional behaviour and create a supportive and positive environment for language learning in the classroom
Additional Assessment Notes: Letter grades of C- to A+, P (pass), and F (fail) will be used. I (incomplete) may be given to the student who is unable to complete course assignments by the end of the semester because of illness or another valid reason, but only after consultation with the instructor. A �W� (withdraw) can be obtained by withdrawing from the course before the College deadline for withdrawals. Note: Students must achieve at least a grade of �C� (60%) in order to count the course toward the TESOL
