BUS 388 Personal Finance explores key personal financial management concepts with a goal of creating an effective personal financial plan. Major concepts include consumer credit, asset management, the time value of money, investments, tax strategies, retirement planning, and estate planning.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. explain and apply compounding interest as it relates to consumer credit and the development of personal wealth.
  2. apply the steps needed to create a good personal credit score.
  3. plan effective debt management and retirement strategies.
  4. develop an effective personal plan for personal financial safety and the prevention of identity theft.
  5. create a workable retirement and estate plan.
  6. explain effective personal tax planning strategies.
  7. create a workable personal investment plan considering tools including RSPs and TFSAs, and any other emerging investment tools as discussed in class.
  8. explain a variety of financial safety nets including employment insurance, bankruptcy and consumer proposals, Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, insurance, and pensions.
