In BKMA 134 Pattern Welded Steel, students learn and practice the ancient art of Damascus steel commonly known as pattern welded steel. The process includes learning about the characteristics of different steel types and hand forging. Students will form the pattern welded steel into a billet by forge welding, drawing out, twisting, annealing, and etching. The finished billet can be further developed in BKMA 138 Artisan Portfolio Project.
Prerequisites: BKMA 132 with a grade of C- or better. Students who do not meet this standard require permission of the School Chair.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Harden and temper 1084, 4140 carbon steel, and O-1 steel
- Choose techniques based on artist preference and desired motifs for billet
- Use standard techniques to layer up a welded billet
- Use standard techniques to create “Damascus” patterns
- Practice safe partner-striking on forged billet
- Identify and propose modifications to design and process of billet making to achieve different patterns
