IPHE 503: Delirium, Dementia & Depression will provide participants with an opportunity to look at current theories of causality, presenting behaviours, risk factors and therapies for each of these conditions. The impact on family and professional caregivers will be assessed by students. Dementia care will focus on methods to enhance and retain patient abilities.
Prerequisites: Admissions to the Advanced Diploma in Gerontology Program.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- recognize the importance of maintaining optimal mental health as a resource for navigating the challenges of later life;
- administer the MoCA assessment tool to screen - and discuss the challenges of doing this test on an older adult and giving them feedback about the results;
- explain the underlying physiological processes of the major types of dementia and reflect on the disabilities that become inherent within each condition;
- analyze strategies that will help dementia clients retain abilities for as long as possible;
- provide in-depth screening for depression in later life and differentiate between the causative factors;
- proficiently utilize several assessment tools which help identify delirium in older adults; and
- critique current treatment modalities for major dementia types, depression and delirium.
