IPHE 512 Mental Health, Addictions and Wellness in Later Years

IPHE 512: Mental Health, Addictions and Wellness in Later Years provides students with the opportunity to examine the vulnerabilities that predispose older adults to mental distress, addiction and illness, and identify early intervention strategies. Participants will discover that mental wellness and brain health can be boosted by timely assessment and diagnosis with appropriate treatment. Students will utilize education or social support with an end goal of improving the older adult's ability to problem-solve, make sound personal decisions, and maintain personal integrity and dignity.

Prerequisites: Registration as an RN, LPN or RPN, Social Worker, Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist or Human Services Diploma. Minimum of 1-year experience with adults. Professionals in other fields, please contact the Program Coordinator.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. distinguish the differences in presentation between mental illnesses that affect the older adult including depression, anxiety, borderline and other personality disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, hoarding, substance abuse and addiction;
  2. apply treatment models to improve the life of an older adult experiencing a mental health disorder;
  3. apply treatment models to stabilize the life of an older adult with addictions;
  4. evaluate and implement appropriate Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) Assessment Tools in case studies and/or in clinical practice;
  5. apply the Bio-psycho-social-spiritual, harm reduction and P.I.E.C.E.S. models to selected case scenarios;
  6. describe vulnerabilities and risks that predispose older adults to mental distress or illness;
  7. utilize therapeutic communication strategies when discussing MHSU issues; and
  8. analyze personal and group member skills.
