PGHM 159 Business Communications

PGHM 159: Business Communications focuses primarily on written and oral communication skills as they relate to the business world. Topics include writing memos, letters, emails, formal reports and other business correspondence, delivering effective verbal presentations, r�sum� preparation and research techniques. Understanding the theory of business communication and being able to employ this theory effectively in written and verbal communication is critical for tourism, recreation, and hospitality managers who wish to succeed. This course places emphasis on the conceptual, practical, and technical aspects of effective workplace communication.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. describe the importance of effective written and oral communications to managerial effectiveness;
  2. employ effective and appropriate interpersonal communication skills (listening, voice, nonverbal, etc.);
  3. conceptualize, create and construct clear, complete, concise, and correctly written assignments that demonstrate understanding of proper grammar, punctuation, and structure;
  4. research, organize and deliver effective verbal presentations;
  5. prepare complete and effective cover letters, resumes, formal reports, memorandums, e-mails, and other written business documents in accordance with researched employer needs;
  6. discuss the role of formal and informal communication systems in achieving organizational goals; also flow of information downward, upward, and laterally;
  7. apply sensitivity to cultural differences in communication and understand strategies for employing appropriate strategies in a multicultural workforce; and
  8. demonstrate leadership skills in meeting planning and management.
