In BKMA 132 Basic Bladesmithing Skills, students learn and practice basic blade forging techniques. Students will actively engage in the design, production, and finishing of a rudimentary steel knife. By the end of the course students will be familiar with the techniques required to complete a simple shop knife.
Prerequisites: BKMA 121, BKMA 123, BKMA 125, and BKMA 127, each with a grade of C- or better. Students who do not meet this standard require permission of the School Chair.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Design a rudimentary spring steel shop knife.
- Describe the design processes to build a knife.
- Apply iterative design process to ensure practicality and usability.
- Practice the techniques required to forge, anneal, and profile a knife blade from steel.
- Practice hardening and tempering steel using a process of heating and cooling.
- Finish and sharpen a shop knife using best practices for safety.
