ENVR 170: Fish and Wildlife Ecology is designed to introduce students to the general ecological principles, taxonomy and management of fish and wildlife in British Columbia.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. identify major features of fish anatomy;
  2. describe characteristics of stream ecosystems;
  3. identify and describe some consequences of human impacts on fish and fish habitat;
  4. describe the habitat attributes for whitetail deer;
  5. describe the different ungulate species found in BC;
  6. describe, quantify, and determine factors important in biodiversity in BC; and
  7. describe basic conservation ecology theory.
  8. work collaboratively in a crew;
  9. complete tasks individually;
  10. collect accurate data;
  11. attend all classes on time and prepared;
  12. distinguish among the major fish families in British Columbia;
  13. demonstrate personal responsibility for all learning and work activities;
  14. work in a safe manner at all times;
  15. reflect on personal and group activities in a constructive but critical manner; and
  16. address intra-crew conflicts directly, constructively, and in a timely manner.
  17. distinguish among feeding strategies in mammals using skull characteristics; and
  18. distinguish among flight strategies in birds using body morphology.
  19. assess canopy cover and understory productivity;
  20. perform an ungulate scat survey; and
  21. determine coarse woody debris volumes.
  22. describe how the constraints of life in water have affected fish biology and physiology;
  23. describe characteristics of lake ecosystems;
