NURS 351 Nursing Practice VI: Promoting Health of Communities and Society practice experience provides opportunities to develop caring relationships with families, groups, and communities and/or populations with emphasis on health promotion and community empowerment. Participants have opportunities to work with a community on an identified health issue.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Practice health promotion with the community as client.
  2. Engage participants in a collaborative process that facilitates health promotion and empowerment.
  3. Demonstrate their ability to engage in community organizing, community development and program development.
  4. Participate in the role of nurse as advocate.
  5. Further develop their capacity to: a) work in groups, b) become self-directed and c) self-evaluation.
  6. Based on previous learning, and experiences, learners will incorporate concepts from all courses throughout this practice experience. Concepts consideration/integration into praxis include but are not limited to the following: a)Epidemiology, b) Nursing Ethics, c) Relationships (clients, collegues, other disciplines) and relational practice, d) Critical Thinking, e) Inquiry, f) Teaching/Learning, g) Nursing Leadership, h) Decision-making Frameworks, i) Health-Promotion Framework, j) Paxis, k) Evidence-informed Practice, l) Nursing Knowledge, m) Ways of Knowing, n) Interdisciplinary/Intersectoral Collaboration, o) Information Technology, and p) Power of Politics.
  7. Contribute to/articulate community and societal goals related to health and wellbeing through interprofessional and inter-sectoral collaboration.
  8. Contribute to team effectiveness in diverse health and social care contexts through collaborative leadership skills (e.g. establishing stakeholders, clarifying roles).
  9. Engage in community development and program planning processes.
  10. Develop capacity to work in community groups and teams, including becoming self-directed and self-evaluative.

AAV ABOVE AVERAGE -The student has mastered all or most course objectives/requirements in a minimum time frame and has exemplified good work and study habits.
COM COMPLETE – denotes that the student has mastered a satisfactory number of course objectives/requirements in a non-credit course
CRG CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was satisfactory in a credit course.
NCG NO CREDIT GRANTED - denotes that the student performance was unsatisfactory.
PCG PARTIAL CREDIT GRANTED – denotes that the student has successfully completed a portion of the course objectives in a credit course.
