RHOT 250: Marketing examines the roles and functions of marketing in the tourism industry. The principles of customer service excellence and service recovery are discussed in detail. You are lead through the five steps of the Marketing Planning Process discovering how the "11 P's" are used in the marketing of tourism products and services. You will conduct a case study analysis of an existing company to demonstrate knowledge of marketing concepts studied.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of first year of the program or successful completion of two years in a different post-secondary program subject to approval by School Chair/Instructor.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. explain the concepts of selective perception, distortion, retention, and exposure in marketing;
  2. explain the concepts of online and social media marketing;
  3. test social media marketing strategies; and
  4. analyze a marketing plan.
  5. explain and integrate marketing terminology in class activities;
  6. describe the roles and functions of marketing in the tourism industry;
  7. differentiate between the marketing of tangible and intangible tourism products and services;
  8. explain how each of the "P’s" are used in marketing tourism products and services;
  9. develop marketing objectives and strategies;
  10. conduct primary research in tourism/recreation marketing;
  11. explain segmentation practices;
  12. outline the steps of the marketing planning process;
