PTEC 106 Merchandising Concepts and Workplace Communications is an introduction to retailing and human relations in a community pharmacy environment. A pharmacy is an important part of the health care system as well as a place of business. Basic principles of retailing include: location, image, store design, consumer profiles and customer support services. Procedures for inventory management include: purchasing, receiving, inventory control and business math. Written and verbal communication skills required for the work setting will be covered in this course. Time management, conflict resolution, patient confidentiality, customer service and resume writing are included.
Prerequisites: Admission to the Pharmacy Technician Program

- interpret and apply principles of business math for mark up, markdown and price adjustments.
- describe the role of the Pharmacy technician in inventory management.
- identify and interpret third party administration for claims in pharmacy.
- describe the role of the Pharmacy Technician as a member of the customer care team.
- define patient confidentiality and practices to protect patient privacy.
- identify skills and strategies that support successful transition to the work environment, including verbal and non verbal communication skills and time management.
- prepare an effective cover letter and resume.
