PTEC 129 Practicum

PTEC 129  Practicum, builds on the student on-line theory and laboratory hands on education, with on the on training. Practicum components provide the opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills and professional values acquired throughout this program. Clinical experiences are individualized in a variety of settings through cooperative alliances with retail, compounding, hospital, institutional, and when available home care pharmacy settings.

 

Practicum experiences will vary depending upon the services provided by individual community and hospital pharmacies. Under the supervision of a pharmacy preceptor, the student is oriented to both community and hospital policies and procedures.

 

The work experience includes practical experience in sterile product preparation, compounding, drug distribution, drug packaging, inventory control and computer entry including file management and record keeping. The work experience is expected to provide opportunity to demonstrate ability to problem-solve, take initiative, follow direction and work effectively as a team member. Students are expected to demonstrate professionalism, ethics and team collaboration.

 

The months of June and July are normally used to provide practical experience in a 4-week block to complete 140 to 160 hours each in a community and hospital pharmacy. Placements are located within or outside the province. Completion of a task checklist and instructor/preceptor evaluation is required a t the conclusion of each practicum rotation.

Prerequisites: Admission to the Pharmacy Technician Program with Successful completion of all theory and lab courses.

Corequisite: PTEC 100, PTEC 104, PTEC 105, PTEC 106, PTEC 107 & 108, PTEC 109 & 110, PTEC 113, PTEC 114, PTEC 115, PTEC 116, PTEC 119 and current certificates for standard first Aid, CPR level C and WHMIS

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. comply with community and hospital pharmacy policies and procedures for: Confidentiality of patient and pharmacy information, Inpatient and outpatient services, Process medication orders, labeling products and distribution functions, Compounding and Sterile Product preparation, Product storage requirements, Computer data entry procedures, Purchasing and inventory management, and Record maintenance and quality assurance.
  2. interpret orders, fill and label a prescription.
  3. maintain patient medication profiles.
  4. accurately calculate, count and pour drug products.
  5. package medications into unit dose form, label and maintain necessary records.
  6. prepare and deliver medications for Automatic Dispensing Cabinets, medication carts, emergency night cupboards.
  7. perform inventory control functions such as drug ordering, receiving, stocking and processing returns.
  8. correctly calculate, measure, compound and prepare sterile products from formula sheet.
  9. identify training and supervision requirements if needed before the preparation of aseptic admixtures.
  10. identify the requirements of an aseptic preparation area that facilitates efficient work flow.
  11. prepare and set up the laminar air flow hood for sterile product preparations.
  12. comply with procedures for scrub and gowning before product preparation.
  13. aseptically prepare parenterals, TPN, medication syringes, antineoplastic agents or other sterile products prepared by a pharmacy technician.
  14. demonstrate the proper positioning and manipulation of sterile products and supplies in a Lamina Air Flow Hood.
  15. demonstrate and comply with safety procedures when preparing and handling chemotherapy agents.
  16. process labels and auxiliary labels for all types of sterile products.
  17. maintain the pharmacy area in an organized manner.
  18. perform duties in compliance with the pharmacy technician Code of Ethics.
  19. demonstrate clear, concise, respectful communication and interaction with patients, co-workers, and other health care professionals.
