ECCE 289: Responsive Inclusive Environments. In this course, students will have an opportunity to learn about ways of understanding and working with infants, toddlers and young children who have extra support needs within a variety of early childhood settings. An inclusive approach with a foundation in knowledge of child development theory will be presented with an emphasis on individual planning, facilitating inclusionary practise and working collaboratively with families, professionals and community services.
Prerequisites: Completion of ECCE certification.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- identify the stressors and complexities experienced by families which include a young child with extra support needs;
- integrate strategies that promote collaborative relationships between caregivers, families and community;
- interpret a variety of appropriate assessment methods, synthesizing information collected to create appropriate learning experiences for the child and ongoing assessment of the processes used to collect the information;
- integrate knowledge of development and disabilities to create strategies that facilitate development and learning in all areas; and
- demonstrate the philosophy of inclusion within professional practice.
