EASL 037 Intermediate Reading: Current Ideas is an intermediate course for students who speak English as an additional language. Students read and discuss selected simplified and authentic articles from the textbook and other sources with a focus on building vocabulary and knowledge of word forms, applying reading strategies such as predicting and inferring, increasing reading speed, identifying structure, and understanding and responding to current ideas. Students are encouraged to do supplementary reading and use both bilingual and unilingual dictionaries.
Prerequisites: Intermediate Reading EASL 027 with a grade of 60% or higher or equivalent skills.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Use a unilingual dictionary; use a thesaurus in a limited way
- Use context clues to guess the meaning of some unknown words;
- Skim and scan to find general and specific information in a variety of texts;
- Summarize short texts using some vocabulary from the text and their own words;
- Identify the main idea and organizational structure of a reading;
- Make inferences and predictions, and discern fact from opinion in short texts;
- Respond orally and in writing to texts of moderate length and difficulty; and
- Find level appropriate reading materials from a library or the internet.
