ECCE 287 Inclusive Practices, learners will study characteristics of exceptionalities in young children and their behavioural implication within inclusive environments. Understanding of the developmental and learning implications of developmental delays and of specific disabilities and health related issues will be the basis for learning specialized techniques and strategies that facilitate development and learning. Communication abilities of the child and ways of enhancing communication will be studied.
Prerequisites: Completion of the basic ECCE certificate at Selkirk College or the equivalent.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- plan and implement individual developmentally appropriate practices based on knowledge of child development, the family, the community, and program goals.
- analyze normal and disordered speech and language and identify the strengths and weaknesses of various augmentative communication systems.
- select and implement methods of behaviour supports appropriate for young children with special needs, including a range of strategies from less structured methods (e.g. verbal support and modelling) to more directive methods (e.g. applied behaviour analysis).
- implement basic health, nutrition and safety management practices for young children, including specific procedures regarding childhood illness; and implementing nutrition and feeding strategies for children with special needs.
- identify aspects of care for medically fragile children and children with complex health conditions.
