NURS 122: Professional Practice II: Introduction to the Discipline of Nursing provides opportunities for the learner to explore the historical development of nursing knowledge and theory as well as the contemporary understandings of nursing as a discipline and the body of knowledge that defines it. Relationships between practice, theory and research are explored as the learner acquires a more comprehensive understanding of nursing as a knowledge-based profession. Learners will also gain an understanding of nursing scholarship and begin to read and critique research.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Semester 1 of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program.

Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- apply scholarly writing, research and critical thinking skills to class activities and course assignments;
- utilize the steps involved in the research process, by applying these fundamentals to one’s own nursing practice;
- identify, define and demonstrate the multiple ways of knowing used in nursing practice;
- apply the Decision Making for Nursing Practice framework to simulated scenarios and actual nursing practice experiences;
- define terminology related to nursing theory;
- implement nurse theorists theories to one’s own nursing practice; and
- demonstrate the determinants of learning (learning needs, readiness, style, health literacy) and basic learning principles (including First Peoples Principles of Learning) to one’s own nursing practice.
