PTEC 114 Sterile Products Lab provides the knowledge and skills required by pharmacy technicians to function effectively and efficiently when working in the Sterile Products room of a hospital pharmacy or in a community pharmacy that specializes in sterile products production. This is a laboratory based course where the learner applies and demonstrates knowledge from a successfully completed theory course PTEC 113 Introduction to Aseptic Technique. Under the supervision of an instructor technical skills are learned and practiced. Learners maintain training logs and validation records as required by their instructor. Adherence to aseptic technique procedures and quality assurance controls will be emphasized through demonstration and practice. Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for the Hospital Pharmacy Preceptorship.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

c. proper aseptic technique in attaching sterile needles to a syringe before withdrawing contents from vials;
d. technique for withdrawing drug fluid from a vial and transferring to an IV solution;
e. removal of air bubbles from a syringe and IV tubing;
f. technique for venting a vial;
g. a technique that creates and maintains negative pressure in a vial;
h. proper aseptic technique for reconstitution of powders in vials;
i. application of calculations to dosages, quantities and measurements;
j. proper positioning and manipulation of sterile objects and supplies in the laminar air flow hood;
k. proper technique for visual inspection of parenteral solutions;
l. communicate effectively with peers, instructors in an ethical professional manner;
m. perform work tasks in a responsible and accountable manner;
