GCOOL 108: Human Resources for Golf Clubs has a profound effect on the success of tourism and recreation operations. An understanding of fundamental human resources management theory and practices is necessary in the service sector where the link between the tourism/recreation operation and the guest is so critical. Innovative approaches to human resources management are necessary to recruit and retain the right people in the industry. GCOOL 108: Human Resources for Golf Clubs focuses on the critical issues that concern managers in the tourism industry: employee relations, recruiting and selection, challenges, trends and employment standards.
Prerequisites: Students must have strong written and computer skills. Students are required to have computer access and high-speed Internet, Microsoft Office 2003 software, Adobe Reader and Shockwave Player.

Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- describe the process and continuum that typify job analyses;
- explain the advantages of effective employee retention strategies and propose how such a program could be designed;
- explain how a comprehensive and effective performance appraisal system could be constructed;
- identify the components of a total compensation package, and describe factors that influence compensation packages;
- identify and describe benefits required by law, and identify and describe common optional benefits;
- explain the purpose of an employee assistance program, identify workplace problems, describe the elements of an employee assistance program, and describe methods of implementing and evaluating an employee assistance program;
- identify and describe the stages of progressive discipline, describe the procedures for dealing with illegal or fraudulent acts and gross misconduct, identify legislation relating to termination of employment, and describe the recommended termination of employment procedures; and
- describe the purpose of an employment standards act, describe key provisions of the employment standards act of their province or territory, and formulate applicant evaluation criteria that are consistent with human rights legislation.
